THE CRONA CANDIDATE TEAM

Nurse Advocate Candidates

Micheal Weiland

Mike is a longtime Stanford nurse, celebrating 35 years of service this year.

For the past 15 years, he has been actively involved with CRONA, first as an Area Representative in both the adult and pediatric emergency departments and for the last 12 years as a Nurse Advocate and Associate Nurse Advocate.

Mike has participated in the last five rounds of contract negotiations, bringing a deep understanding and historical knowledge of both Stanford Health Care and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and the issues that matter most to Nurses across all locations.

Mike has been a consistent and dedicated voice for Nurses. He takes pride in representing CRONA members, ensuring their concerns are heard, and standing up for the rights of Nurses at both institutions.

Rachel Crawford (Gratz-Beken)

Rachel, a seasoned nurse with 12 years of experience, began her career in adult medical/surgical trauma in the South. Despite facing high patient-to-nurse ratios and low pay, she quickly learned to advocate for safe patient care.

Transitioning into a travel nurse role, Rachel continued to refine her advocacy skills by ensuring safe assignments and not hesitating to voice her opinions. She finally found solace in CRONA upon joining LPCH in 2018 and starting her new pediatric position. In 2022, she actively participated as a member of the CRONA negotiations team, advocating for improved weekend scheduling and flexibility for nurses. Her dedication led to her election as CRONA Nurse Advocate in 2022, where she has continued to enforce and advocate for the hard-fought contract.

In 2025, Rachel served as co-chair of the negotiations committee alongside Simon Atkinson. Together, they worked to engage the membership while providing education on the contract language. CRONA successfully secured yet another incredible contract, despite the uncertain economic times.

Rachel’s passion for helping nurses achieve the best work-life balance possible drives her to seek another term as CRONA Advocate.

Simon Atkinson

Simon brings a wealth of experience as a candidate for CRONA leadership. He has 18 years at Stanford: 7 years in the ED and the last 11 years in the Cath Lab.

Dedicated to excellence in Nursing practice, Simon spent 4 years as a PNDP panel member and Chair. He was recently appointed the CRONA liaison to the PNDP where he advocates for PNDP candidates and ensures the smooth administration of the PNDP process.

Simon has been a CRONA Associate Nurse Advocate for 2 years, passionately supporting our members' rights and privileges protected by our contract.

Simon served on the 2025 Negotiations Committee where, along with Kathy Stormberg and Rachel Crawford (Gratz-Beken), he helped lead the communications effort between the Negotiations Team and Committee, and the CRONA membership. He organized hospital rounding to ensure members understood the collective bargaining process and the resulting contract.

Also in 2025, Simon led the initiative to help 95 Case Managers organize and vote to join CRONA.

Ellen Renne

Ellen has been a nurse for 10 years and is deeply passionate about advocating for fair treatment and strong representation for Nurses.

She has worked at Stanford Children’s Health for the past four years, serving at the bedside on both the Acute Care Float and Bass Float teams.

An active member of CRONA,  Ellen has served  on the Negotiations Committee and is a CRONA delegate to the San Mateo County Labor Council. Her experience across these roles has strengthened her commitment to improving working conditions and ensuring Nurses’ voices are heard at every level.

Ellen brings a strong working knowledge of both the LPCH and SHC contracts, as well as hospital policies and HR procedures tools she uses to uphold fairness and equity in the workplace.

Executive Board Candidates

Colleen Borges

President

Colleen has been a pediatric oncology nurse at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital for 31 years. In addition to her work at LPCH, she has served as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in private practice and at Kaiser, as well as a Clinical Nurse at both Kaiser and UCSF.

The most rewarding part of Colleen’s career has been the 20 years she has dedicated to CRONA. She began as an Area Representative and a member of the Negotiations Committee and Team, later becoming a Nurse Advocate, then Vice President for LPCH, and for the past 12 years, CRONA President. She has participated in every contract negotiation since 2007 and vividly recalls the pivotal moments CRONA nurses have faced and overcome together.

Under her leadership, CRONA has grown to more than 6,000 members and expanded its representation to new groups of critical nursing staff at both SHC and LPCH, including the Transfer Center, Case Managers, Patient Placement Nurses, Occupational Health Nurses, and Nurse Coordinators. CRONA is now in the process of negotiating for newly added Case Managers at SHC further strengthening the diversity and reach of the union.

Colleen’s passion for advocacy began early in her career, as she recognized the importance of standing up not only for patients but also for the nurses who care for them. She firmly believes that CRONA’s greatest strength lies in its nurse-led leadership where every board member, advocate, and representative is a practicing nurse who understands firsthand the realities of bedside care.

As healthcare continues to evolve, Colleen is committed to ensuring that CRONA remains a strong, respected voice within Stanford and Packard. She is dedicated to protecting nurses’ rights, expanding representation, and leading with experience, compassion, and integrity in the years ahead.

Kathy Stormberg

SHC Vice President

Kathy brings a broad nursing background and strong record of union advocacy to her candidacy for reelection as Vice President. She has worked in med-surg, ICU, L&D, PACU, and outpatient and even spent time as a manager.

Discovering the benefits of working in a unionized hospital upon starting at Stanford after several years in the military, Kathy became a unit Area Representative. She was then recruited to join the CRONA side of the Nurse Practice committee, helping to write Stanford's first house-wide Vacation Policy and Staffing and Scheduling Policy.

Kathy was first elected CRONA Vice President in 2013 and has been a strong CRONA leader ever since. She helped lead contract negotiations from 2016 onward, spent the last 12 years negotiating and enforcing strong contracts to make our hospitals the best place to practice our Nursing profession. She believes that CRONA Nurses set the standard for unionized Nursing, and seeks reelection in order to help keep CRONA at the forefront.

Her experience as a travel nurse gave her a broad perspective on working conditions across the country, both inside and outside of California. She joined Stanford in 2018, and in 2020 was one of the first nurses to volunteer to work in the COVID ICU.
